Some cats sit around sticking out their tongue from time to time. It’s nothing to be concerned about. A slightly protruding tongue is just one of the ways in which a cat can look adorable. However, if your cat has not had a prior habit of letting her tongue hang out and has started to do so, it could be a sign of a health problem.
Possible reasons for a newly protruding tongue include the following:
■ Gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums that indicates the beginning of periodontal disease.
■ Stomatitis, generalized inflammation of the oral cavity that includes the gums, tongue, and other tissues.
■ Oral tumor, which could potentially change how the mouth closes.
■ Kidney failure, which can lead to painful ulcers on the tongue, gums, and edges of the lips.
If your cat has always had a habit of sticking out her tongue and seems relaxed, there’s probably nothing to worry about. But if it’s a new habit and your cat seems like she might be in pain, take it as a sign that a visit to the veterinarian is in order.
