Q: I read with interest last month’s article saying that it can be good environmental enrichment for a cat to be walked outside with a harness and leash. I’ve gotten my cat used to having the harness put on, but as much as it seems she would love some access to the great outdoors, she simply will not cross over the threshold. I have now tried (gently and patiently) many times over the course of two weeks. What should I do?

Dear Ms. Genge,
A: Stop trying. Some cats, even though they seem for all the world like they would like to go out, are just too jittery to follow through on their dreams. The world won’t come to an end. If at some point down the line you want to try again, consider whether there’s a back door to leave from, which might lead to a quieter environment. Maybe there’s also a different time of day that she would prefer. But always keep in mind that taking a walk on a leash outside is not something your cat has to do.
