The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic version of the brand-name drug Clavamox, used to treat infections of the skin, soft tissue, and urinary tract in cats. The drug contains the antibiotic amoxicillin, which kills infection-causing bacteria. It also contains clavulanate potassium to inhibit an enzyme that can destroy the amoxicillin.
Clavamox generally doesn’t cost more than $40 or so for a prescription — and sometimes it’s much cheaper depending on the form it comes in (pill rather than liquid) and the amount the cat needs. But in a head-to-head comparison, the generic version should be considerably less expensive.
